In this article, we are going to discuss and answer the question “When was diet coke invented?”.
When was diet coke invented?
Diet coke was invented in 1982, this is the year diet coke introduced. Before that, the planning manager was still discussing the idea of diet coke for 2 years. There was another diet drink before diet coke emerged which was Tab, it was believed to be the first diet drink, not diet coke.
The drink was called No-Cal referring to the lack of calories it contains.
Tab was produced a year earlier than diet coke. Tab referred to being careful and watchful of your weight by the low calories it provides. Thus, the company started researching the diet coke that we know nowadays to replace Tab.
They focused on the flavor most importantly by removing the phosphoric taste and making it smooth to the taste.
The company used aspartame with saccharine to add to the diet coke. Yet the FDA only shortly approved the aspartame 2 years ago
It was a risk to come up with diet coke for the presence of another competitor providing a low calories drink. Tab was the famous low-calorie coke back there. Going with the idea of inventing diet coke was a risk the company had to take when it introduced the product to the market.
If diet coke was a flop, this will affect the future of the company immensely. If leaders of the company did not approve of such a product being produced, then the product will not see the light.
Tab was the first in the US market back then in diet sodas. Trying to overcome such a famous competitor comes with a lot of risks. People were so used to drinking Tab as their go-to soft drinks.
It would be hard to make them switch from something they are used to and known to something new. This made it so risky to introduce diet coke. Diet coke used aspartame which was approved not long ago, but it was not as researched and studied. Many sweeteners or even drugs take years of research to see some later possible health concerns.
Concerning the name, they were choosing diet coke. It was a process too. Coca-Cola could not pick the name lighter, due to the similarity of the name with other companies. They were left with the option of diet and sugar-free.
Diet had some annotations with no sugar or calories in the drink. The use of the lowercase of diet coke is because the diet in lower case is an adjective, and the uppercase of diet is a noun.
The marketing of diet coke was simple and straight to the point. Going for red letters on a white background would grab the attention. They added the slogan “just for the taste of it” to give it such simplicity and straightforwardness.
It shows that you can still have a diet coke with only one calorie, communicating that it will not cause weight gain and you will not deny yourself the taste of coke you enjoy.
Before they even picked the design sign of the diet coke, they had to try out how it looks in the grocery stores for the customer. They picked a design that would grab the attention of customers when they see it on the shelf.
The can had an aluminum shine. The background was white with red letters on it. Usually the color red grabs the attention of people very quickly, and to make it pop, even more, they added the white background to contrast the difference in the color.
Diet coke also targeted people with problems with their weight in the US. Celebrities with lean bodies who were thin, from movie stars to footballers, to actors. They tied the image of being thin to the consumption of diet coke.
Advertising that it had only one calorie in one can, it will pass through the allowed food that causes no weight gain. Since the name gave some masculine connotations, that was a start point with which the company can work. Addressing the male audience, and male celebrities in their advertisements.
For the taste of diet coke, the company had to experiment a lot to come up with a taste that is appealing to everyone.
