Sodium in diet coke

In this article, we are going to discuss “Sodium in diet coke”. I will also define sodium and the consumption of too much or too little of it. I will add the salt recommendation per day, and some terms added on food products related to salt.

How much sodium is in a can of diet coke?

There are 40 milligrams of sodium in a 12-ounce (354-mL) can of diet coke. Diet cole has no nutritional benefits in it, which means it has no vitamins, minerals, macronutrients ( carbs, protein, fat), or micronutrients. Macronutrients are needed in larger amounts, while micronutrients are needed in smaller amounts.

What is sodium?

Sodium is a kind of metal, when it is present as sodium chloride is called salt. The common name for sodium chloride is table salt. Salt is needed to balance electrolytes in the body which affects blood pressure, kidney health, and heart health. Salt is used in the treatment of cystic fibrosis.

What happens if I have too little salt?

Too much salt or too little both cause issues. Too little salt in the body can be due to either a medical condition or too much fluid retention on the body.

Some medical conditions such as Addison disease, heart failure, and slow thyroid can cause low sodium levels in the body. If a person has either diarrhea or vomiting that too can cause dehydration, and their sodium levels will drop.

A blockage in the intestines would lead to low sodium levels. Moreover, burns are open wounds that cause fluid to leak out and more sodium loss will happen.  It also can be due to drinking a large amount of water throughout the day.

Low levels of sodium can cause issues such as affecting energy levels, seizures, and twitching of muscles, and it will affect brain activity. In extreme cases, people would lose consciousness.

What happens if I have too much salt?

Too much salt is also a problem, salt has been linked to health issues such as hypertension ( high blood pressure), stroke, and kidney diseases.

The presence of excess salt in the blood would bind into the water in blood vessels, which leads to an increase in the volume of these blood vessels. More volume would exert the heart as it has to pump more and work twice as much to pump blood around the body. This will damage blood vessels.

The AHA recommends potassium intake to reduce the sodium levels in the blood. Potassium reduces blood pressure by easing the tension in blood vessels.  But potassium intake is not recommended for those with kidney diseases. Since their kidneys do not function well in filtering excess electrolytes from the blood.

What is the recommended amount of salt can I have per day?

According to the American Heart Association Association, AHA,  sodium intake should be no more than 2300 milligrams a day( around 1 teaspoon), and 1500 milligrams for adults.  Sodium is in all food around us, it is added to salty snacks, and crackers and is present in so much food naturally. It also falls under some different names like sodium nitrate, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, and MSG (monosodium glutamate).

What is the meaning of different terms of salt in packed food?

There are a number of food products that have terms that suggest a product is salt-free, or reduced salt. Each one of them contains a different number of salt and means something different.

Sodium-free or salt-free products would mean it has less than 5 milligrams of sodium in a serving. Despite having the word free, it does contain some sodium in it. Very low sodium food contains 35 milligrams or less per serving.

While low sodium contains a much higher sodium content of 140 milligrams per serving. The other two terms on food pancakes are measured in percentages. Reduced sodium means 25% less salt in a serving in comparison to any other product, while lightly salted or light in sodium means a 50% reduction in salt per serving when compared to a normal product.

Does diet coke have a lot of sodium in it?

If you compare the sodium in diet coke to the amount of salt you can have per day; it is not high in sodium. Any food that contains 40% of the daily value per serving is considered high in sodium. Diet coke contains 1% of the daily value in an 8-ounce can serving.
