In this article, we are going to discuss the diet “Seventh-day Adventist diet”, the definition of that diet and the food prohibited and allowed on that diet. I will also show some health benefits of the Seventh-day Adventist diet.

What is the Seventh-day Adventist diet?

The Seventh-day Adventist diet is a diet followed by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Followers of this faith adopt a lifestyle. They adhere to a certain diet, exercise, and practice spirituality. It is a diet that is said to be preserved for the body of God. It is characterized mostly by vegetarianism and categorizes meat as clean or unclean.

Seventh-day Adventist, SDA in short, is a religion first organized in 1863 in the eastern USA. SDA promotes that the body should be taken care of by enhancing lifestyle, happiness, and spirituality. 

Thus, Adventists believe that the body, mind, and spirit are united, interrelated, and integrated. This means one piece of these three would affect the other like the lego effect. 

They believe that the human body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and should be cared for. They avoid caffeine, alcohol, highly refined food, hot condiments, spices, narcotics, and unclean meat (pork, rabbit, shellfish).

Is the Seventh-day Adventist diet vegan or vegetarian?

The Seventh-day Adventist diet is mostly composed of a vegan diet with limiting meat consumption. Some Adventists are vegan excluding all meat sources in their diet. However, other Adventists follow a vegetarian diet including eggs, low-fat dairy, and fish.

What is clean meat?

Clean meat according to the Seventh-day Adventist diet is meat that is the same as Kosher meat. Kosher is a term used to describe food that adheres to traditional Jewish law. This meat should come from animals with cloves or slits like cows, camels, sheep, or goats. 

The person slaughtering the animal must be trained and aware of the Jewish law. Chicken, geese, quail, dove, and turkey can be consumed by Seventh-day Adventists. The utensils used in the animal slaughtering must be washed separately and adhere to the kosher rules. In addition to that, blood is removed from the meat by soaking it. 

What is unclean meat?

Unclean meat is meat that is not allowed to be consumed on the seventh-day Adventist diet. These include pork, rabbit, and shellfish. These types of meat are considered unclean and eliminated from the diet. 

What is the food that can be consumed on a seventh-day Adventist diet?

Vegetables can be consumed on the Seventh-day Adventist diet. They are considered healthy for the body and support the diet some vegetables include:

  • Broccoli
  • Bell peppers
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Carrots
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Lettuce
  • Cucumbers 

Fruits are also to be enjoyed on the Seventh-day Adventist diet, some include:

  • Raspberries
  • Watermelon

Nuts and seeds, are rich in healthy fat and omega 3 and can be consumed on the  Seventh-day Adventist diet, some include:

  • Sunflower seeds
  • Flaxseeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Peanuts
  • Pecan nuts
  • Brazilian nuts

Legumes consumed  in moderation include:

  • Beans
  • lentils
  • Peas
  • Chickpeas
  • Kidney beans

Grains  are small hard seeds either with hull or without, these include:

  • Quinoa
  • Buckwheat
  • Brown rice
  • Oats
  • Barely
  • Corn
  • Teff 

Diary 

These you should consume in moderation:

  • Cheese
  • Butter
  • Low-fat milk
  • Ice cream 

Some good alternatives to dairy:

  • Almond milk
  • Soy milk
  • Coconut milk 

What are the health benefits of the Seventh-day Adventist diet?

Followers of the Seventh-day Adventist diet often follow a vegetarian diet plan because of the limitation of meat and its products. With this in mind, a vegetarian diet has been linked to lowering the risk of metabolic syndrome which include diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity 

In addition, vegetarian diets have been linked with weight reduction. This is due to the fact that by eating fewer meat products, less fat is consumed in your diet, and fewer calories as well. Vegetarian diets according to this research show a greater reduction in weight in comparison to non-vegetarian diets. 

Plant-based diets are also rich in fiber that support healthy digestion and the colon. The body needs fiber to prevent constipation, increase the bulk, promote healthy bowel movement, and increase the healthy gut bacteria.
