Is diet mountain dew bad for you?

Yes, diet mountain dew is bad for you. Despite having no sugar, it contains a lot of harmful ingredients that you should be aware of. Diet mountain dew is enjoyed by many people all over the globe, yet so many people do not know some of the bad ingredients in it. It contains some harmful effects on the human body that will be discussed.

What is in the diet of mountain dew?

There are some ingredients in the diet mountain dew that are considered harmful. Some of them include aspartame, caffeine, EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid), potassium and sodium benzoate, the artificial color of Yellow 5, and brominated vegetable oil.

Aspartame

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used in sweetening diet mountain dew. It is a chemical composed of amino acids phenylalanine and aspartic acid with a methyl ester. It is used in many products such as ketchup, diet Pepsi, jello, cough medicine, and vitamins. It is approved an approved sweetener by the FDA.

Caffeine

Caffeine contains some health benefits, but the caffeine used in carbonated sodas like Mountain Dew is not natural and has reduced benefits. Excess caffeine consumption might irritate some people who are more sensitive to it than others.

The caffeine included in the mountain dew would cause a variety of symptoms. Some would include restlessness, and alertness which would cause insomnia. It also causes some gastrointestinal issues like vomiting and nausea on top of that.

By increasing the heart rate, it increases the respiratory rate, and blood pressure is raised. It is not suitable for those with heart problems or high blood pressure.

EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid)

EDTA  is a poisonous additive in many foods to keep discoloration and preserve food. The most serious and dangerous side effects of EDTA are kidney damage and kidney failure. Yet it has some side effects some of which include:

  • Anemia
  • Chills, fever, or headache
  • Blood clot in a vein
  • Lower levels of magnesium and potassium in the blood
  • Diarrhea
  •  Vomiting
  •  Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Abnormal calcium levels in the blood
  • Insulin shock
  • Irregular heartbeats, which can be severe
  • Low blood pressure
  • Thirst
  • Aching joints

Potassium and sodium benzoate

When a food contains potassium and sodium benzoate with vitamin C or ascorbic acid, it forms benzene. Benzene forms an allergic reaction in people who are likely to have  eczema, itchy skin, or a chronically stuffy or runny nose

Yellow 5

The side effects of consuming yellow 5 included:

  • Allergies
  • Hyperactivity
  •  Increase risk of cancer
  •  Asthma
  • Hives
  • Chromosomal damage

Yellow 5 is not healthy and is added to many drinks, snacks, and candies.

What are some healthier alternatives to diet mountain dew?

There are some other alternatives to mountain dew that can be even better for you than diet mountain dew. Other healthy drinks include drinking water. Water is beneficial for your body, it moisturizes your skin giving it a glow.

People who drink more water, have better skin. The dehydrated skin would look dull and dry when not enough water is consumed. Water is also needed to carry certain vitamins and nutrients throughout the body. Dehydration causes an inability to focus, low energy, and in severe cases fainting.

Another healthy alternative is milk. Milk provides vitamins and minerals and is a nutritious drink. It provides the essential calcium the body needs to maintain bone health. People who do not take sufficient calcium are more likely to have lower bone density.

This is due to the need for calcium by the body, so they take it from bones. With lower bone density, bones become weaker and it increases the risk for fractures. This is more prevalent in elderly people who are more likely to break their bones.

Another healthy alternative is fruit drinks that are natural. These juices include fruits that are freshly squeezed without any added sugar to them. Even though whole fruits are more nutritious due to their higher fiber content in them.
