Diet coke’s nutritional facts in a 12-ounce can contain 0 calories, 0 grams of fat, 40 milligrams of sodium, 0 grams of carbs, 0 grams of total sugar, 0 grams of protein, and 46 grams of caffeine. 

If you take a look at the nutritional value, we see a lot of zeros in terms of macronutrient composition. It brings no macronutrient addition in that drink, no carbs, fat, or protein. 

The good thing about the drink is that it contains no sugar in it. Excess sugar consumption causes weight gain, and inflammation among other health issues. It also contains zero calories as well. 

It contains 40 milligrams of salt.  The recommended salt intake is about one tablespoon (2300 milligrams) per day. This makes coke high in sodium as well.

PKU, phenylketonuria, is a rare medical condition that causes phenylalanine to build up in the body. The enzyme responsible to break down the amino acid phenylalanine is absent which causes the build-up of this amino acid in the body. 

Symptoms range from mild to moderate and it affects the nervous system, intellectual abilities, behavior, emotions, social aspects, mental health, skin, hair, eye color, and breath odor. Patients with PKU follow a lifelong low phenylalanine diet avoiding all food and beverages with phenylalanine.

What is more nutritious food than diet coke?

Nutritional food or drinks are nutritional because they contain certain nutrients that the body needs. Salmon is a very nutritious food containing the highest omega-3 content out of other fatty fish. Salmon is also rich in protein, a high-quality animal protein that provides essential amino acids to your body. It is rich in minerals such as magnesium, potassium, selenium, and vitamins.

Kale is loaded with antioxidants that help fight off free radicals that age the cells. It is also rich in many vitamins including vitamins C, A, K, and B6. In addition to minerals like potassium, magnesium, copper, and manganese.

The liver is one of the most nutritious organ meat compared to other organ meat.  It is rich in B vitamins, copper, phosphorus, zinc, and selenium. Potatoes are also nutritious as well. The starchy vegetable packs some minerals such as magnesium, iron, copper, and manganese. It also contains Vitamins C and B.

What happens when diet soda is consumed in excess?

When consumed in excess amounts diet soda has some major health effects on the body.  The high acidity content in diet sodas would lead to erosion of your teeth. In addition to that, diet coke contains phosphoric acid.

Too much consumption of phosphoric acid reduces bone density and leads to osteoporosis. This can increase risk of bone fractures. Diet coke is sweeter than sugar which can make you crave sweeter food and increase sugar cravings.

What are some healthier drinks alternatives to diet coke?

There are some healthy drinks instead of diet coke.  Water is one of these healthy alternatives. 

Water is the healthiest drink for your body. Water has many functions including the regulations of body temperature, moistening body tissues, protecting body organs, carrying nutrients and oxygen to the cell, flushing out waste, and dissolving nutrients such as water-soluble vitamins. 

Coffee and green tea are other healthy alternatives to diet coke if there is no added sugar in them. Fruit juices are healthy as well. Milk contains calcium, vitamin B12, and riboflavin.
