Yes, diet coke is bad for your kidney. Studies have shown a higher rate of chronic kidney diseases, and diet coke. 

Kidneys are crucial to the human body. Exposing kidneys to some toxins that would reduce their function would later make your health decline. Late stages of kidney failure require kidney dialysis. 

A process of filtering your blood 3 to 4 times a week through a machine that mimics what kidneys do. In addition, it is so hard to find a donor that is compatible with your body for a kidney transplant. On top of that, the an increased risk of the organ being rejected by your body as well.

Diet Coke is a type of coke where sugar is removed, and replaced by a sweetener. Usually, the sweetener is aspartame. Yet diet coke still poses some serious risks to kidney health.

People who consume diet sodas believe that since it contains no sugar, it is healthy and can be enjoyed without a limit or risk. But recent studies have proved the opposite.

People who drink diet sodas are replacing the water with soda as their drink when they are thirsty. Diet sodas contain caffeine, and are not considered water. 

Thus, consuming more of these diet sodas leads to dehydration. It happens when not enough water is provided to the body and especially the kidneys. This leads to kidney pain and damage. 

According to the National Kidney Foundation, drinking more than one drink of diet coke per day reduced kidney function in patients. One drink per day did not cause a problem. However, 2 to 3 drinks per day did.

Doctors researched the link and studied the effects of diet coke on the kidneys. Women drinking several drinks of diet coke per day showed a major decrease in their kidney function. The decrease in the function was over two decades.

In 20 years the reduction in kidney function reached up to 30%. The women who participated in this study were nurses who had healthy kidney function.

The diet coke seemed to decline kidney function by 3 times as much as those who did not drink any diet coke. The decline was in the glomerular filtration rate which is an indicator of kidney function. 

Kidney stones

Diet coke can also increase the risk for kidney stones according to this study. The diet coke seemed to increase the risk for kidney stone formation. 

What are the functions of the kidneys in the body?

The main function of the kidneys in the body is to filter the blood. They are also responsible for balancing fluids, and electrolytes and removing wastes.

The kidneys are responsible for the control of the pH levels of the blood, it also balances your blood sugar. If the blood sugar is too low, it helps fix that.

The kidneys have a crucial role in vitamin D production. Vitamin D is needed for the absorption of calcium and maintains bone density.

Kidneys produce erythropoietin hormone which is responsible for making red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the whole body.

Kidneys also have a role in reducing inflammation and metabolism control. They control the blood, raise it if it is too low, and lower it when needed. Thus stabilizing a healthy blood pressure level.

How can I protect your kidneys?

We discussed how important the kidney is for the body and our health. Here are some ways to protect our kidneys and keep them healthy.

  • Hydration is the most important thing. Yet over-hydration is not beneficial in any way.  You need 4-6 cups of water per day.
  • Healthy diet: picking healthy food choices will protect you against cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and high blood pressure all of which affect your kidneys.
  • Physical activity: exercise is important to shed off the extra pounds and reduce the risks of diseases.
  •  Be cautious with supplements and herbal supplements and ask your doctor about them.
  • Quitting smoking of any form.
  • Reduce the consumption of over-the-counter meds.
  • Check your kidney’s health by screening.
