Is a liquid diet good for hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are small swollen veins around the anus and lower rectum. It can be internal means inside the rectum or external hemorrhoids which means under the skin of the anus. 

Hemorrhoids are painful and uncomfortable and should be managed. It can lead to many complications like anemia that is caused by excessive bleeding that happens with hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids can be painful and cause bleeding. It occurs over time due to a low-quality diet and lack of fiber in the diet.

Hemorrhoids can be treated and or even got rid of them. The most important way is to increase the fiber content in your diet to prevent the straining that causes hemorrhoids in the first place.  A liquid diet is even suggested for hemorrhoids.

What is a liquid diet?

A liquid diet is a diet that contains only liquid food as a source of sustenance. It includes the juice of fruits, milk, coffee, tea, yogurt, protein supplements in liquid form, soups, and water.

Liquid diets are usually given to people before surgery to reduce the residue the person excretes. Since constipation is more likely to occur in patients if they eat before surgery since the digestive tract is slowed down after surgery.

The liquid diet is adapted for hemorrhoid patients to reduce the pain that comes with passing stool. If constipation occurs, you will have to suffer and be in pain trying to pass stools. The liquid diet is temporary to reduce the pain and discomfort that the patient is feeling.

Liquid food will reduce the residue in the stool as the hemorrhoids heal gradually. It includes liquids such as juices from fruits and vegetables. Caffeinated beverages are also allowed like tea and coffee.  Any type of milk can be consumed on a liquid diet.

Milk variety is animal milk or plant milk like almond milk. In addition, you can have milkshakes and sports drinks.  Soups include clear and creamy ones that are included in the liquid diet. Semi solids like yogurt are included as well. 

The purpose of the diet is to relieve you of the pain associated with hemorrhoids. 

What are the foods that are not allowed when you have hemorrhoids?

Food that increases constipation should be prohibited for those with hemorrhoids. Food such as processed grains, pasta, rice, and flour is low in fiber and should be avoided to prevent further constipation. 

Fast food, meat, cheese, chips, and ice cream all increase your constipation. These foods are low in fiber and will not help relieve your symptoms.

Any type of frozen and ready-to-bake is low in fiber as well. All these foods should be avoided and limited as much as possible and replaced with foods that are higher in fiber content.

What are some foods that are allowed when you have hemorrhoids?

The food included should be high in fiber to reduce constipation. Whole grains are high in fiber because they are high in fiber and not processed, they can be found in cereals that are rich in bran or wheat. You should also include fruits and vegetables for their richness in fiber. 

It is better to eat fruits with their skin. Prunes are also high in fiber. For vegetables, you can go for peas, sweet potatoes, or winter squash. Beans are packed with fiber as well such as kidney beans, navy, or pinto beans.

According to the Dietary Guidelines, you should include 28 grams per day if you are having 2000 calories per day, and 14 grams of fiber if you have half the calories. It is also important to drink lots of water to hydrate your body well.
