There are three types of carbs. These carbs are divided into sugar, starch, and fiber. Sugar is the simplest form of sugar. This sugar is found in fruits, milk, and table sugar. Fruits contain a type of carbs called fructose. Whole milk contains a different type of sugar called lactose. Added sugar is the sucrose found in many sweets such as cookies, candies, and sugar-filled drinks. 

Starch is a more complex type of carbs. Complex carbs mean many sugars are bonded together. This type of sugar can be found in vegetables, grains, and fruits. Some include oats, potatoes, rice, popcorn, chickpeas, quinoa, beans, banana, beans, and yams.

Fiber is another kind of carb as well. When calculating the carbs in the food, net carbs are calculated when total carbs are deducted from fibers. Even though fiber falls under the carbs category, fibers can not be digested. Fiber passes through the body undigested. Fiber is beneficial, it supports healthy bowel movement, increases the stole bulk, and prevents constipation. 

There are two categories of fiber, soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber can be dissolved in water. This type of fiber is beneficial in lowering glucose and cholesterol levels in the blood. Soluble fiber maintains weight and promotes a healthy gut. This type of fiber is found in:

Some food that contains insoluble fiber is wheat bran, vegetables, whole grains,  brown rice, legumes, leafy greens like kale, almonds, walnuts, seeds, and fruits with edible skins like pears and apples.

Fiber is beneficial as it lowers the risk of certain diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, diverticular disease, and constipation.
