In this article, we are going to discuss “Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan”. I will introduce Dr. Nowzaradan and the diet he came up with. I will add the benefits and disadvantages of Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan. I will answer a few questions about salt, and sugar that can be consumed in the diet and what food to avoid.

What is Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan?

Dr.Nowzaradan’s diet plan is a diet first introduced by a general surgeon known as Dr. Nowzaradan. It is a low-calorie diet with 1200 calories, it excludes only sugar. It is low in fat and carbs and high in protein and vitamins.

By restricting calories, fat, and carbs the diet plan would make you lose weight quickly without losing muscles due to the high protein content.  The low calories diet avoids high and caloric dense  food.

Who is Dr. Nowzaradan?

Dr. Nowzaradan is an Iranian- American general surgeon from Houston, Texas. He got his medical degree in 1970 from Tehran University in Iran and ever since has been practicing medicine for twenty years. 

His areas of specialties are gastric sleeve surgery, gastric bypass surgery, lap band system, and revision surgeries. Most of his specialty surgeries are addressed for weight loss.

He had a show called “My 600-LB life” which showed the weight loss journey of his patients. He is known to have an effective diet plan.

What are the benefits of Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan?

Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan is low in calories, but not in vitamins or minerals. It includes all food groups except for sugar. Less starchy vegetables are chosen, and fruits that are lower in sugar are chosen.

The most noticeable benefit is weight loss in a short period of time. Because it restricts calories to 1200 calories, it makes the body lose weight. Usually, people consume more than 2000 calories per day, some reach up to 3000 calories. Reducing the calories by half, your body will adapt to it gradually and lose weight.

What are the disadvantages of Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan?

Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan is not for any person trying to lose weight. This diet comes with certain disadvantages at hand. 

One of these disadvantages would be the risk of regaining weight and often overeating. This weight loss diet causes decreases in energy expenditure, fat oxidation, and anorexigenic hormone that causes loss of appetite like leptin. On the other hand, it increases orexigenic hormone like ghrelin which increases the appetite.

Another disadvantage is the micronutrient deficiency it poses. Low-calorie diets put the person following them at risk of developing some serious deficiencies if followed for the long term.  Because of the limited quantity and small portion size in a low calorie diet, not all nutrient requirements will be met. Some of the vitamins and mineral deficiencies to be developed are:

  • Vitamin D
  • Calcium
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin B3
  • Vitamin E
  • Selenium
  • Zinc
  • Potassium

Microbiome changes

According to this study, restrictive diets cause changes that are detrimental to the colon. It reduces microbial abundance. This can be changed by providing probiotics to improve the microbiome and decrease body fat. 

What are the food groups to be consumed on Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan?

The five food groups are consumed in Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan. Fruits and vegetables are consumed between 5 to 9 servings per day. 

Protein is under 8 ounces for men and under 6 ounces for women. Men have more protein because they have more muscles physiologically. 

Fats and oils are measured in teaspoons and it is 7 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men. 

The course of carbs from grains is under 8 ounces for men, and under 7 ounces for women. 

Fiber intake is  25-35 grams for men and 20-25 grams for women. Diary is limited to 3 cups per day.

Can I have salt and sugar on Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan?

Sugar is not allowed on Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan. Sugar is considered empty food that gives no nutritional value to your diet, it only provides calories. 

Salt is limited on Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan to less than 2300 milligrams per day because of the need of the body for electrolytes, salt can not be eliminated for it is needed for some body functions.

What to avoid while following Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan?

Foods to avoid on Dr. Nowzaradan’s diet plan:

  • High starchy vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, and peas
  • Juices
  • Sugar
  • Chocolate
  • Syrups
  • High sugary fruits such as mangoes, watermelon, pears, cherries, cantaloupe, bananas, figs, or cherries
  • Jams
  • Shakes
  • Nuts
  • Dried fruit
  • Alcohol
  • Energy drinks
