Does an anaconda eat humans?

In this article, we are going to answer: do anacondas eat humans, what is an anaconda, what snakes can eat humans, are anacondas dangerous, and what an anaconda eats.

Do anacondas eat humans?

Yes, anacondas can eat humans if they feel treated by them or are hungry to eat. Anacondas are the largest and longest snake in the world. They are very strong and eat animals bigger than humans so in theory,

Even if theoretically they can eat humans, there is no evidence or reports on anacondas eating humans.

What is an anaconda?

Anacondas or water boas are semi-aquatic snakes that are part of the genus Eunectes. They are from the family of Constrictors non-venomous snakes. They are normally found in South America and are 4 types of species. Anacondas are the largest snake in the world because of their weight and the second-longest.

The four types of anacondas include

  • Eunectes murinus or green anaconda
  • Found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, and Trinidad y Tobago.
  • Eunectes notaeus or yellow anaconda
  • Found in Bolivia, southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina.
  • Eunectes deschauenseei or darkly-spotted anaconda
  • Found in Brazil and French Guinea
  • Eunectes beniensis or the bolivian anaconda
  • Found in Bolivia

Anacondas tend to live in tropical weather and look for humid places. They spend more time swimming than on land. Anacondas are usually more active during the evening and night, which makes it easier for them to hide and kill their food. Also, they can easily camouflage with their green color scales to hide during an attack.

They have adapted to live both in water and on land so they don’t thrive to survive. They are especially very fast when hunting in the water.

Anacondas are not endangered but they do face a problem with being hunted because their skin is very valuable. The biggest threat to anacondas is that tropical forests have been used to construct and make cities bigger.

Are anacondas dangerous?

Even if anacondas have not actually eaten humans they are the largest predator in the world. Specifically, the green anaconda is very dangerous. Female green anacondas are almost twice the size of male green anacondas and are considered the most aggressive snakes in the world.

There is a theory that anacondas would attack humans only if they feel aggression towards them because humans are not their primary source of food.

What snakes can eat humans?

There are only 4 snakes in the world that can eat humans. These snakes include the African rock python, Burmese pythons, and reticulated pythons.

African Rock Python

In 2002, the African rock python ate a 10-year-old boy in South Africa. These snakes have evolved to survive in many different environments. They are native to sub-Saharan Africa and can survive from savannah to woodlands. They are very dangerous because they can live in urban civilizations.

Burmese Pythons

In 2008 a Burmese python killed a Caracas zookeeper. The snake was about to eat him when other zookeepers interfered. These snakes are native to Southeast Asia and live normally in trees.

Reticulated Pythons

There are several cases reported where reticulated pythons have eaten humans. These snakes are native to South and Southeast Asia. They have the ability to adapt to their habitat so they can be found near people.

What does an anaconda eat?

Anacondas are excellent predators. Young anacondas can eat fish, birds, and small mammals. Adult anacondas eat larger animals such as deer, capybara, caimans, and large birds. Female anacondas can eat male anacondas, especially during the breeding season.

Other animals that anacondas can eat include

  • Peccaries
  • Pigs
  • Sheeps
  • Jaguars

Bigger animals such as cows can’t be eaten by anacondas because they are too big and too heavy for them to swallow.
