Do people eat pandas?

In this article we are going to answer: do people eat pandas, what pandas are, whether pandas are hunted by humans, what pandas eat, and whether pandas are endangered.

Do people eat pandas?

No, people do not eat pandas. Pandas are more often seen in China where they are protected. Even though Chinese people can eat pets such as dogs, rabbits, cats, and other exotic animals, pandas are not part of their menu.

According to Chinese scientists, prehistoric people ate pandas and the flavor is described as having a very bad flavor that is almost not edible to humans.

Pandas are more often hunted for their fur. China has spent a fortune on the preservation of Pandas but they can also be seen in zoos.

What are pandas?

Pandas are known by their scientific name Ailuropoda melanoleuca. There are 1864 pandas in the wild and live in the temperate broadleaf and mixed forests in southwest China. They are seen especially in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu. Pandas are considered an endemic species in China because of farming and deforestation.

They are covered by black and white fur which makes them a national treasure all around China. Their white and black fur serve them as camouflage and to communicate between them.  Pandas can measure up to four feet and weigh about 220 to 330 pounds. Because of their heavy weight, they need to eat around 30 to 90 pounds of bamboo per day.

When living in the wild, they can also eat grasses, wild tubers, or meat from birds, rodents, or carrion. When kept in captivity, they can be fed with honey, eggs, fish, yams, oranges, and bananas. Pandas can not live outside bamboo forests even if they are fed milk, cereals, fruits, and vegetables in captivity.

Newborn pandas are very small, they can be as little as 1/900th the size of their mother. Even if they are very heavy, they are excellent tree climbers.

Pandas can be killed by humans, snow leopards, yellow-throated martens, eagles, feral dogs, and Asian black bears.

Are pandas hunted by humans?

Yes, humans are the major predator of Pandas and it is why they are an endangered species. Pandas are hunted because they have valuable furs. Another reason why pandas are an endangered species is that they have lost their habitat.

China experienced a boom in its population around the 1950s which led to deforestation and farming reducing the area where pandas lived. The construction of roads and new cities leave pandas more solitary than they are. The bamboo forests were also reduced leaving pandas with less food.

In 1988, the hunting of pandas decreased because of the enactment of the Wildlife Protection Act which bans poaching and carries severe punishment when hunting Pandas. Still, Pandas can be killed by accident or by other species.

What do pandas eat?

Pandas thrive on bamboo. They can eat about 26 to 84 pounds of bamboo per day. Their diet is about 99% based on vegetarian sources such as bamboo roots, stems, shoots, and leaves.

They can also be carnivores in a very small percentage. Some animal food pandas can eat include eggs, small animals, pikas,  and carrions.

Are pandas endangered?

Yes, pandas have been considered an endangered species since the 1980s but back in 2016, they changed their status to vulnerable. There are around more than 50 pandas reserved but only 67% of wild pandas’ life is reserved. Even after being protected by China’s government, pandas are still at risk.

Back in the 1980s, there were only 1115 pandas in China and nowadays there are only around 1,800 pandas and their habitat is threatened because infrastructure projects lack good planning. After 30 years, the population of pandas has grown but their future is still not secure.
