Can you eat stingrays?

In this brief guide, we will discuss the following question, “can you eat stingrays?”, and other queries related to this topic.

Can you eat stingrays?

Yes, you can eat stingrays. This type of fish like any other type and seafood can be cooked and consumed safely after cleaning it. So, you need to remove all the bones and cartilage before cooking and consuming it. Also, you need to remove the venomous barbs present along its spine.

Because these glands might be toxic thus should not be eaten. However, there are not enough studies regarding the venom glands in the stingray fish and their degree of toxicity. But it is known that the toxicity of these toxins is present when they enter your bloodstream through the skin.

Some people find that eating stingrays is not worth it because it needs a lot of time to be prepared before cooking to remove bones and due to the low yield of meat that comes from this fish. But medium-size stingrays that have a length of around 18 inches to two feet might yield some meat.

However, small ones will not be worth the effort to be prepared because you will not get enough meat from them. Also, avoid big stingrays that are bigger than two feet because their meat will be tough for consumption after cooking and preparation.

Only some parts of this fish can be consumed by humans. Mainly people consume the cheek which is the area around the eyes and the wings. The other parts are high in cartilage and will have a rubbery texture when cooked thus becoming hard to chew.

Generally, this type of fish is mainly consumed in Malaysia and Singapore. The stingray can be grilled, fried, or barbecued. But the most used method is barbecuing. The meat is seasoned with soy sauce or spicy sambal sauce.

The meat of the stingray has a white color. When well cooked the texture of the meat will become denser. The taste of the stingray is like a mix of lobster and a white-fleshed fish. However, the taste depends on each person and his preferences.

Moreover, it is not necessary to consume the meat of this fish cooked but it can also be consumed raw when served with some sauces. But you should make sure about the quality and the freshness of the meat because any bad handling can lead to poisoning.

Some people and age groups should completely avoid consuming stingray fish due to its high content in heavy metals like other big fish including tuna and sharks. So, mostly pregnant women should stay away from consuming such fish to avoid damaging their fetus organs like kidneys and brain.

What are the health benefits of stingray fish?

Regarding its health benefits, stingrays are high in proteins and fat. Since it is high in fat it will be high in calories so watch your intake. But it is rich in many vitamins, especially fat-soluble ones like Vitamin D and E and other water-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin B12, B1, B2, B9, and B6.

Also, it is rich in several minerals like selenium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, phosphorus, copper, niacin, calcium, iron, and choline. So, despite its heavy metals content, stingray fish can be consumed as part of a healthy and balanced diet.

How to prepare a stingray?

First of all, to prepare your fresh stingray you need to clean it well. So, lay the stingray fish over a clean surface or table and bring a sharp knife to start the cleaning process. To start, you need to remove the barb situated at the end of the tail. Use the knife to remove it.

Once removed, it will be time to find where the body meets the wings. The body is full of bones so it can not be consumed, thus wings are the part that should be cleaned for preparation and consumption. When you find the spot, use a sharp knife and cut it from the front to the back.

When the wings are separated from the body, use the knife to remove the skin from the meat. Then, when you finish this whole process, soak the meat in a salty solution for at least 90 minutes. Next, remove it to proceed with the cooking.

The stingray meat can be cooked in several ways like grilling, broiling, frying, and many others. So, you decide on the method you are willing to use in order to prepare the meat. But make sure to not overcook it to avoid having rubbery meat at the end.
